In 2010, our National headquarters launched the National Youth Advisory Board (YAB). Comprised of student leaders from all ASAS chapters, YAB members provide feedback and guidance on current programs, take the lead on service learning projects in their respective communities, and serve as ASAS ambassadors. Students are chosen based on their leadership abilities, strong attendance, academic performance, and unwavering commitment to serve their peers as representatives of their local program.“
After School All-Stars Chicago is proud to introduce David J. of Dewey School of Excellence as the 2015-16 Chicago representative on ASAS’ National Youth Advisory Board. ASAS is important to David because the program is available to students with struggling families and helps to solve youth obesity, high school dropout and other important problems. “As staff listen to my ideas as a student leader I feel valued and important. They make me feel like my problems will be addressed,” David shared with us.
Not only is David a student athlete at his school, he also makes time to give back to his community. David will continue to support his peers and aspire to be a good role model and leader. Being with ASAS has made David feel better prepared for high school. He says he takes advantage of the academic support and leadership support the program has to offer, and wants to use these skills to become a better student and scholar.
Ms. Ashley Bias, Dean of Students at Dewey, recognizes David’s improvement since being in the program. “David has shown amazing growth and improvement academically and behaviorally. He’s a positive role model for his peers and does not shy away from leadership and responsibilities. In addition, David is college-driven and knows that it is going to take an effort to meet his goal.”
We are so happy to have David represent Chicago as a NYAB leader!
